Life’s too short to take notice of inspirational quotes.

Take a risk. Take a chance. Be brave, say yes!

Deep.

We’re surrounded by messages telling us to do something that scares us every day, often accompanied by completely unrelated pictures of the ocean, clouds in the sky, or climbers standing atop mountains. Nice to look at, and inspiring for the few seconds before our brains move on to something else.

Inspirational misuse of fireworks.

These pictures are EVERYWHERE. Because of this, the message behind the words is often watered down and easily forgotten. We become immune to the idea of ‘living every day as though it’s our last’ and quickly return to our day to day lives.

No sign of any clichés here.

But what if we took these messages to heart? What if we did something that scared us every day, lived as though there were no consequences, and took every chance that came our way? With our production, our aim is to explore the potential of risk-taking, using Kelly’s character as a way of responding to problems facing many young people today; unemployment, finding somewhere to live and lack of money.

One of the problems involved with taking a chance is that the consequences might not always be positive for everybody involved. For Kelly, acting in a way that benefits her means hurting others around her in different ways. Despite the clear message of the live part of the show, we aim to promote the ‘take a risk’ idea in a cynical sense. Through the use of glitter, fixed smiles and a mutinous contestant, we hope to satirise the (sadly over-used) concept of carpe diem.
